Analysis
Ten seconds to leave the field when substituted. A minute off after treatment. A five-second countdown, visibly signalled, on throw-ins and goal kicks. The changes are small individually and they add up to a different way of regulating delay.
Analysis
A ball on the line is in, unless you are playing basketball, where the boundary line is not court at all. The disagreement is written into the rulebooks, and it decides which edge of the paint the tape measure is held against.
Explainers
Law 2 specifies the ball in five lines. Read the tolerances rather than the numbers and the specification turns out to be unusually loose in the one property that most changes how the ball behaves — and to be pinned to a place and a moment that no match actually occupies.
Analysis
World Aquatics gives the 50-metre pool a tolerance of plus ten millimetres and minus nothing — and requires that length to hold from 300 millimetres above the water to 800 below it. The asymmetry is the same one athletics applies to a wind reading.
History
The Athletic Shoe Regulations define an approved shoe in four clauses, and each clause names a different date. Read as a chronology rather than a definition, it is the record of a governing body absorbing a technology it did not anticipate.
Analysis
The ICR hands a course setter a vertical drop, two spacing windows, a turn density and a required mix of combinations — then tells them the result should match the average ability of the first thirty competitors. Every course is different, and every course is the same problem.
Analysis
World Athletics treats a reaction time under 0.100 seconds as evidence that a sprinter moved before the gun. That threshold is a claim about human physiology, and a study on instrumented blocks found five of nine athletes averaging under it.
Analysis
FIS does not tell a course setter how many gates to use. It tells them how many direction changes to make per metre of vertical drop — and slalom's figure is five times giant slalom's, which is nearly twice super-G's, which downhill does not have at all.
Explainers
Singles and doubles use different sidelines and different back boundaries for the serve — and the two disagreements point in opposite directions. Doubles serves into a wider, shorter box; singles into a narrower, longer one.
Explainers
FIBA's cylinder principle gives each player a personal volume of court whose dimensions vary with their height and size. It is the one rule in the book measured in units of the body rather than in metres — and there are two versions of it, depending on who has the ball.
Features
A strung net always dips in the middle. Tennis decided to make the dip 156 millimetres and mandated a strap to produce it; badminton lets it be 26; volleyball forbids it and allows 20 millimetres of error. One physical fact, three regulatory answers.
Features
The UCI fixes a track's length, its width, the position of three painted lines and the requirement that any cross-section be straight. It does not fix the banking, does not require the four quadrants to match, and the resulting geometry is often withheld as commercially confidential.
Explainers
Basketball's shot clock has two numbers, and the smaller one is not a discount on the larger. Read against FIBA's Article 29, the fourteen-second reset turns out to be a rule about who lost the ball, not about how much time is left.
Analysis
Rule 2 of the Rules of Golf defines the field of play in about eighty words and contains no measurement of any kind. The Equipment Rules, meanwhile, fix the ball's mass to two decimal places and its diameter to three.
Features
FIS will not sanction a race on ground it has not homologated, and the dossier it requires is a portrait of what a venue has to be. Gradients and vertical drop take a few lines. Evacuation, water supply, uphill transport and cable runs take the rest.
History
Until 2000 the sport had no official way to say how fast a surface played. What it built afterwards was replaced within eight years, because the first measure did not match what players said they felt — and the replacement is still only valid for the day the test was run.
Analysis
A legal shuttlecock may vary in mass by 16 per cent and a legal tennis ball by 6. A football's inflation pressure may nearly double. And the golf ball has no permitted range at all — its rule bounds it in one direction only.
Analysis
Tennis approves a separate high-altitude ball and requires sixty days of acclimatisation. Badminton lets a national association change the shuttle. Football states its pressure specification 'at sea level' and stops there.
Explainers
A block contact is not counted as a team hit, so a team that touches the ball at the net still has three touches left. That single sentence is why the block is a weapon rather than a last resort.
Analysis
Basketball's three-point line is defined twice over: as an arc 6.75 m from the basket, and as a pair of straight lines 0.90 m inside the sidelines. On a 15-metre court those two definitions cannot both give the same distance, and the gap they leave is fifteen centimetres wide.
Sports Science
Dip before you jump and you jump higher. The gap between a countermovement jump and a squat jump is treated as a readout of elastic energy — but a review of the mechanisms concludes elastic energy is a small contributor, and that a bigger gap may be the worse sign.
Explainers
Having declined to specify the field of play, the Rules of Golf spend Rule 8 forbidding five ways of improving it. It is the mirror image of every sport that standardises its surface and then lets players do as they like on it.
Explainers
The net is not what a volleyball has to cross. The rules define a crossing space bounded laterally by two 1.80-metre antennae, and those antennae are legally part of the net even though most of each one is above it.
Explainers
World Athletics defines the finish as the instant a specific part of a specific body reaches a vertical plane. Producing that instant takes a camera aligned with the line, a thousand frames a second, and a test run before every session to prove the clock started when the gun did.
Explainers
FIS asks a gate panel to release from its pole when a racer gets caught by it and not to release during a normal collision. Two requirements that sound contradictory, both tested, and both answers to what a skier at speed actually does to a gate.
Explainers
Every other rulebook gives its ball a band — so much to so much. The Equipment Rules give golf a maximum weight and a minimum diameter and nothing else, which is a specification written entirely against one direction of travel.
History
In 1986 the men's implement was changed so that it would come down nose-first. The world record is the reason everyone cites; World Athletics' own account gives a different one — and the rule that made it work is not about the centre of gravity at all.
Explainers
Volleyball's specialist defender is created by a rule that grants almost nothing and forbids a great deal: no serve, no block, no attack above the net, and — in one clause — no attack by anyone else off a particular pass.
Explainers
Basketball's no-charge semi-circle is the one area of the court where the same collision changes owner. Part of its boundary is painted on the floor. The rest of it exists only in the rulebook, projected down from the front edge of a backboard three metres in the air.
Analysis
World Athletics' shoe regulations are read as a limit on how much energy a sole may return. Read the document and the limits are on something else entirely: a thickness at two specified points, the topology of a rigid structure, and whether anyone can buy the shoe.
Analysis
Every other governing body in this Journal's corpus approves a ball by measuring it. The Laws of Badminton describe the shuttle in millimetres and then test it by hitting one down the court and looking at where it lands — a window 460 millimetres wide.
Explainers
Law 3 regulates two entirely different resources with one rule: how many players a team may replace, and how many times it may stop the game to do it. Only the second of those is about time.
Sports Science
The ITF approves four balls for adult tennis. Put their specifications side by side and they agree exactly on weight and on how far they squash — and differ on diameter, on how high they bounce, and on how much shape they have got back before the load comes off.
Explainers
Rule 1 gives the net a height at the posts and a different, lower height in the middle, then requires a strap to hold the middle down. The 15-centimetre difference is the only deliberate asymmetry on a court that is otherwise perfectly symmetrical.
Explainers
The UCI limits how high a sock may rise, and it does not use centimetres. The limit is half the distance between the middle of the lateral malleolus and the middle of the fibula head — a rule stated in anatomy, for a stated reason.
Analysis
Cycling's technical regulation is usually read as a fight over marginal gains. Read the governing body's own clarification guide instead and a different rulebook appears — one that regulates the shape of a bicycle to preserve an idea of what a bicycle is, and states that purpose in writing.
Analysis
Freestyle means any style. Backstroke is bounded by an angle, breaststroke by an order of movements, and all four by the same fifteen metres. Read together, the rules describe a sport that regulates the surface of the water more than the swimmer.
Explainers
A record stands or falls on a wind reading averaged over ten seconds at one point beside lane one. The rule that converts that reading into a number is not symmetrical, and the asymmetry always runs the same way.
Analysis
Law 1 gives the football pitch a range and every marking on it a single number. Draw the legal extremes at the same scale and the consequence is unmistakable: the penalty areas cover a third of the smallest permitted field and an eighth of the largest.
Analysis
Law 5 makes video assistance conditional on something that has to happen first: an on-field decision, including a decision not to give anything. Read that clause carefully and most arguments about VAR turn out to be arguments about a different system.
Analysis
Rule 7.4 pins six players into a strict relative order — and only at the moment the server strikes the ball. Everything volleyball is known for happens in the fraction of a second after that constraint stops applying.
Explainers
Article 14 forbids anything that may aid speed, buoyancy or endurance — a test of effect rather than of shape — then permits a data recorder that must not transmit, and tape on up to two fingers or toes.
Sports Science
Cycling has long put the benefit of drafting at somewhere between a third and a half. A study simulating two 121-rider pelotons at nearly three billion cells apiece, checked against four wind-tunnel tests, found that deep inside a packed bunch the figure is not a third. It is a twentieth.
Analysis
Read four rulebooks side by side and a division appears that nobody argues about: three of the four give the playing area a single number, and the fourth gives it a range wide enough to swallow two-and-a-half of its own smallest legal pitch.
Sports Science
Drag rises with the square of speed, so an object with a very large drag area and very little mass decelerates violently. A study that built and validated a flight model for the shuttlecock found the term that dominates everything — and proposed replacing badminton's own speed test with it.
Analysis
A rink is manufactured to a specification — a temperature, a hardness, sometimes a deliberate texture. Every one of those settings is a decision, and each of them changes the sport played on top of it.
Analysis
How a sport counts is not bookkeeping. It decides whether a disaster is survivable, whether a lead can be defended by running down a clock, and whether a match may end level at all — and football, tennis and volleyball each answered differently.
Explainers
Between the pelvis and the upper arm, measured rotation speed climbs more than fivefold. That escalation, not the arm at the end of it, is where a fast serve comes from.
Explainers
A fencer's lunge and a badminton retrieval are the same shape used for opposite purposes. Sport's variety is a set of recombinations of one short list of human movements — and the list is what makes transfer between sports legible.
Explainers
Law 11 does not tidy up football's edges. It removes the shortest route to goal — and the flat back line, the trap, the press and the timed run are all downstream of that one choice.
Features
A track is specified by how much force it swallows and how far it sinks, not by how well it grips. Both numbers have an upper bound as well as a lower one, and that is the whole design problem: a surface springy enough to give energy back is soft enough to waste it.
Features
Wood set the limits of a tennis frame more strictly than any rulebook did. When composites removed them, head size, stiffness and string-bed behaviour all moved at once — and the two-handed topspin backhand became the cheaper answer.
Features
A competition pool has one hydraulic job: to take back the energy eight swimmers pour into it and not give any of it back. Depth, lane ropes, lane width and the gutter are four different exits for the same waves.
Analysis
The ITF's surface table separates clay from every hard court with a single word: unbound. A few millimetres of loose grit over a deep compacted base is the whole difference — and it rewrites which shots and which footwork are worth having.
Features
A padel ball and a tennis ball are almost the same object. The ground they are hit on is not — because two of these sports decided that a boundary should return the ball instead of ending the point.
