Volleyball Set

An overhead pass using the fingertips of both hands to place the ball accurately for a teammate to attack.

Technique

Overview

The set is the second contact in volleyball's bump-set-spike sequence and delivers the ball to an attacker in a hittable position. The setter contacts the ball above the forehead with the fingertips of both hands and pushes it upward with a soft, even touch.

A quiet, symmetrical hand shape and using the legs to guide direction give a set its accuracy and consistency.

How to do it

  1. 1Move under the ball and face your target.
  2. 2Raise your hands above your forehead in a rounded triangle shape.
  3. 3Contact the ball with the pads of your fingers on both hands equally.
  4. 4Extend your arms and legs to push the ball upward and outward.
  5. 5Follow through toward the intended hitter.

Key points

  • Form a triangle window with your hands above your forehead.
  • Contact the ball with the fingerpads of both hands at the same time.
  • Extend your legs and arms together to guide the ball to the target.
