Swing bowling
How a cricket ball is made to curve in the air — the seam position and surface asymmetry behind conventional and reverse swing, and why swing is a property of the ball as much as the bowler.
Overview
Swing is sideways movement through the air, before the ball bounces. It is produced by presenting the ball so that the air flows differently over its two sides, which creates a pressure difference and pushes the ball off a straight line.
Two things make this possible: the raised seam, which can be angled to trip the airflow on one side, and the asymmetry between the two halves of the ball's surface as one is polished and the other is allowed to roughen.
Conventional swing
The bowler holds the ball with the seam angled towards the slips or towards fine leg and keeps it upright through delivery. The angled seam disturbs the airflow on one side while the smoother side lets it stay attached longer, and the ball drifts towards the rough side.
A shiny side and a rough side amplify the effect, which is why fielding sides work so hard on one half of the ball and leave the other alone. A ball polished evenly on both sides swings far less than one maintained asymmetrically.
Reverse swing
As a ball ages and one side becomes markedly rougher, the aerodynamics can invert: at sufficient speed the ball begins to move towards the shiny side rather than away from it. This is reverse swing, and it is the reason an old ball can become dangerous again.
Because it happens with an old ball and at pace, reverse swing typically arrives at a point in an innings when batters have stopped expecting movement. It is worth being careful with explanations here: the broad mechanism is well described, but the precise thresholds depend on ball condition, speed and seam presentation, and are not a single fixed number.
Where the Laws come in
Because swing depends on the ball's condition, the Laws are strict about who controls it. Umpires hold the match balls from before the toss and take possession at the fall of a wicket, at intervals and at any interruption of play.
Polishing the ball is permitted; altering its condition by other means is not. The line between maintaining a ball and changing it is one of cricket's most heavily policed rules precisely because the aerodynamic payoff is so large.
How to do it
- 1Hold the ball with the first two fingers either side of the seam and the thumb beneath it.
- 2Angle the seam towards the direction you want the ball to move.
- 3Keep the wrist behind the ball so the seam stays upright through the air.
- 4Release with the seam still angled rather than letting it wobble.
- 5Maintain one side of the ball and leave the other to roughen naturally.
- 6Aim a fuller length than usual, so the swing has distance to act before the bounce.
