Strike rotation
Why singles matter more than they look in cricket — how rotating the strike unsettles a bowler's rhythm, protects a struggling batter, and is decided by the over structure itself.
Overview
Strike rotation is the practice of taking singles to keep changing which batter is facing. It scores slowly and looks unremarkable, and it is one of the most valuable habits in batting.
It works because of the over structure. Bowling alternates ends every six balls, and the batter at the bowler's end when an over finishes becomes the striker for the next one. An odd number of runs off the last ball keeps the same batter on strike; an even number changes it.
What it does to a bowler
A bowler settles into rhythm by bowling repeatedly to the same batter, building a plan over several deliveries. Rotating the strike takes that away: the plan has to restart, the field has to be reset for the other batter, and any left-hand/right-hand combination forces the bowler to change line as well.
This is why a left-right batting pair is valued beyond either individual. The fielding side is compelled to reorganise constantly, and reorganisation is where errors appear.
Protecting and exposing
Rotation lets a set batter take more of the strike and a struggling one take less — or, near the end of an innings, lets the better striker face the crucial deliveries. It is also how a batting side shields a tail-ender from a dangerous bowler.
The reverse is a real tactic too. A fielding captain who wants a weaker batter on strike will often set a field that makes singles easy for the set batter and hard for the other, which is the same mechanism running the other way.
Where it matters most
In limited-overs cricket, dot balls are a permanently spent resource, so rotation directly protects the run rate without requiring risk. Scoring at a run a ball through singles alone produces a competitive total in most formats.
In the long format the calculation is different, because balls are not scarce. Rotation there is mainly about denying the bowler rhythm and about who faces which bowler, rather than about the rate.
