How a slow bowler turns the ball — finger spin against wrist spin, off breaks, leg breaks and the deliveries that go the other way, and why flight matters more than turn.

Overview

Spin bowlers impart rotation on the ball so that it grips the surface at the bounce and changes direction. They give up pace to do it, which means a batter has time — so a spinner has to beat them with deviation, with flight, or with a mistake in judgement rather than with speed.

Spin divides into two families by how the rotation is produced. Finger spin comes from the fingers rolling across the ball; wrist spin comes from the wrist and the third finger flicking it. The families turn the ball opposite ways from the same hand.

Finger spin and wrist spin

A right-arm finger spinner bowls the off break, which turns from off to leg to a right-handed batter. A right-arm wrist spinner bowls the leg break, which turns from leg to off. Left-arm bowlers mirror this: left-arm orthodox turns the ball away from a right-hander, left-arm wrist spin turns it in.

Each family has a delivery that goes the other way. The off spinner's is often called the doosra or the arm ball depending on how it is produced; the leg spinner's is the googly. These variations are what stop a batter simply playing for the stock delivery.

Flight beats turn

The turn is the visible part, but it is rarely what takes the wicket on its own — a batter who has picked the length can play for a lot of turn. What beats a batter is being wrong about where the ball will land.

Slower, higher-flighted deliveries dip and land shorter than they appear to be going to; flatter, quicker ones hurry on. A spinner who can vary trajectory while keeping the same arm speed makes length unreadable, and an unread length makes any amount of turn dangerous.

What the surface gives back

Spin depends on the pitch more than any other bowling discipline. A dry, worn surface with footmarks grips a spinning ball; a fresh, grassy one does not. The Laws' provisions on maintaining the playing area exist partly because the surface is this decisive.

It follows that a spinner is usually most dangerous late in a long match, and that a captain will often hold a spinner back on day one and open with them on day four on the same pitch.

How to do it

  1. 1Choose the family that suits you: fingers across the ball, or wrist and third finger under it.
  2. 2Grip the ball across the seam so the seam can grip the surface at the bounce.
  3. 3Spin the ball hard — revolutions matter more than trying to aim the turn.
  4. 4Keep the arm speed constant so flight changes are not telegraphed.
  5. 5Vary trajectory rather than pace alone, to make the length hard to read.
  6. 6Aim a length full enough that the batter must commit before the ball deviates.
