Catching

The skill of cleanly securing a ball travelling through the air or off the ground.

Skill

Overview

Catching is taking a ball out of the air and holding it securely. It is central to fielding sports and to any game where possession is won by receiving the ball with the hands.

Good catching is about watching the ball all the way in, presenting soft hands and giving with the catch so the ball does not bounce out. It rewards concentration as much as reflexes.

Key points

  • Watch the ball right into the hands rather than looking away early.
  • Soft, giving hands absorb the ball’s pace so it does not spill out.
  • Getting the body behind the ball provides a backup if the hands miss.
  • In cricket and baseball, catching a batted ball can dismiss or retire a player.
  • Positioning early under a high ball makes the catch far more reliable.
