Positions & roles
Pitcher
The player who throws the ball toward the batter to begin each play in baseball and softball.
Positions & roles
Definition
In baseball and softball, the pitcher stands on the mound (or in the pitching circle) and throws the ball toward the batter, starting each play. The pitcher aims to prevent the batter from hitting cleanly, using varied speeds, movement and placement to make the ball difficult to strike.
Pitching is a central role because every play begins with the pitch, and the pitcher works closely with the catcher to plan each delivery. Control, timing and a mix of throws are more important than raw power alone.
