Center
The center is usually the tallest player on a basketball team, playing near the basket to score inside, rebound, and protect the rim.
Overview
The "five" anchors the team around the basket. On offence they score close to the rim, set screens, and finish lobs; on defence they contest shots, block attempts, and grab defensive rebounds.
The center is the last line of defence in the paint and a focal point in the low post, using size and positioning to control the area near the basket.
Responsibilities
- Scores close to the basket in the low post.
- Grabs rebounds at both ends of the floor.
- Blocks and contests shots to protect the rim.
- Sets screens and finishes lobs and cuts.

Player roles
- AnchorThe anchor is a cross-sport holding role: a steadying, defensive-minded player who shields the back line, screens danger and gives teammates a reliable base.
- Target playerA target player is a focal attacker who receives, holds up and links play for others, often physically strong and good in the air or with the hands.
- Last line of defenceThe final barrier between an attack and a score — the goalkeeper, sweeper or last-ditch defender whose job is to stop what the rest of the team has let through.
- PlaymakerThe playmaker is a team's creative hub — the player who orchestrates attacks, controls the tempo and distributes the ball so teammates can score.
- Utility playerA dependable, versatile player who can competently fill several different positions as the team needs, rather than specialising in just one.
Rules
- GoaltendingA basketball violation for interfering with a shot while the ball is on its downward path to the basket or above the rim.
- Out of boundsThe rule that a ball or player leaving the marked playing area is out of play and possession is decided at the boundary.
- Shot clockA timing rule that requires the attacking basketball team to attempt a shot within a set number of seconds.
- Personal fouls and free throwsThe basketball rules covering illegal contact and the uncontested shots awarded when a player is fouled.
- Volleyball rotationThe rule that players rotate one position clockwise each time their team wins back the serve.
Skills
Tactics
- Zone defenceA defensive system where each player guards an area of the court rather than a specific opponent.
- Pick and rollA two-player basketball action where one player screens for the ball-handler, then rolls to the basket.
- Fast breakPushing the ball up court at speed after a turnover or rebound to score before the defence sets up.
- High pressA football tactic where a team hunts the ball high up the pitch to win it back close to the opponent’s goal.
- DraftingRiding, running or swimming close behind another competitor to save energy in their slipstream.
Sports communication
- Role clarityEveryone on a team understanding what their own job is — and their teammates' — so effort is not wasted on overlap or gaps.
- Captain communicationHow a team's designated captain relays decisions, sets a tone and — in many sports — acts as the recognised point of contact with officials.
- Coach-to-player feedbackHow a coach shares usable information with a player about what they did and what to try next — usually specific, well timed and focused on one thing at a time.
- Active listeningGenuinely taking in what a teammate or coach is communicating — not just hearing it — so the message actually lands.
- Pre-match communicationThe talking a team or individual does before play — plan, roles, key cues and a shared focus — to start on the same page.
