Cricket creases
The white lines marked at each end of a cricket pitch — bowling, popping and return creases — what each one is for, and the exact measurements that decide no-balls, run-outs and stumpings.
Overview
Four creases are marked at each end of the pitch: one bowling crease, one popping crease and two return creases. They are not decoration. Between them they decide whether a delivery is legal, whether a batter is safely home, and where a bowler may run.
Law 7 fixes all four. The bowling crease marks the end of the pitch and is 8 ft 8 in (2.64 m) long, running through the centres of the stumps. The popping crease lies 4 ft (1.22 m) in front of it and parallel to it. The two return creases stand at right angles to the popping crease, 4 ft 4 in (1.32 m) either side of the middle-stump line.
The lines that are "unlimited in length"
The popping crease is marked to a minimum of 6 ft (1.83 m) on either side of the middle stumps, and each return crease is marked from the popping crease to a minimum of 8 ft (2.44 m) behind it. But the Laws then say something that surprises people reading them for the first time: both are considered unlimited in length.
The paint is a practical minimum; the crease itself continues as far as it needs to. A batter diving in a long way outside the marked paint is still behind the popping crease, and a bowler whose foot lands beyond the painted return crease has still landed outside it. Umpires judge against the line, not against where someone stopped painting.
Which edge counts
For the bowling crease the back edge is the marking that denotes the end of the pitch. For the popping crease, what matters to a batter is being behind the line — grounded bat or body past it — and what matters to a bowler is having some part of the front foot behind it on landing.
Because the popping crease sits 4 ft in front of the stumps, a batter standing on the crease is not standing next to the stumps. That 4 ft gap is the margin a wicketkeeper works in for a stumping, and it is the reason a batter who over-balances forward after a stroke is vulnerable even without having advanced down the pitch.
