Training & fitness

Definition

Cross-training is the practice of mixing in a second activity alongside your main one — for example, a runner adding some swimming or cycling, or a footballer using gym work. The added activity is chosen to complement the main sport rather than to replace it.

People cross-train to add variety to their routine, to keep training when their usual activity is not possible, and to build fitness in a slightly different way. It is a common idea across endurance sports and general fitness, and multi-sport athletes such as triathletes work across several disciplines by design.
