Scoring

Aggregate Score

The combined total of scores across two or more matches used to decide a multi-leg tie.

ScoringAlso known as: aggregate, on aggregate

Definition

An aggregate score adds together the results of two or more matches, called "legs," between the same two teams to determine an overall winner. It is common in cup competitions decided over home-and-away legs, where a side losing the first leg can still progress by overturning the deficit in the second.

For example, a team losing 0-1 away and winning 2-0 at home wins 2-1 "on aggregate." When the aggregate is level after all legs, competitions apply a further tiebreaker such as extra time, a penalty shoot-out, or historically an away-goals rule. Aggregate scoring is distinct from a single-match result and from the league points totals a team accumulates across a season.
