Grooming
Grooming is the machine preparation of ski runs that flattens and compacts the snow into a consistent surface.
Definition
Grooming is the overnight work that turns loose or chopped-up snow back into an even, compacted piste. Tracked machines flatten bumps, break up ice, redistribute snow and leave the characteristic corduroy ribbing that a freshly groomed run shows first thing in the morning.
It is what makes a marked piste predictable: a groomed surface is consistent enough that a rider can commit to a turn without reading every metre of ground. Grooming also explains why the same run feels quite different at different times of day, since traffic gradually undoes the preparation as the hours pass.
