Five steps, then the arithmetic in plain sight
Every question is optional, and “no preference” genuinely counts for nothing — it cannot quietly penalise a sport.

An internal fit score, not a rating
Each question you answer is worth a fixed number of points, set in advance and identical for every sport. A sport’s fit is simply the points it earned divided by the points that were available from the questions you actually answered — which is why every result shows both numbers.
That makes the score internal and relative to you. It is not a rating of the sport, not a popularity measure, and two different sets of answers produce fit scores that cannot be compared with each other. There is no machine learning here and nothing is personalised from anything but your own answers.
Ties are broken alphabetically, deliberately — ranking by a curated popularity weight is exactly what left more than a third of the sports in this knowledge base unreachable from every recommendation surface before this finder existed.
Other ways in
The finder is one door. The knowledge base has nine more, and they all lead to the same connected graph.
Ten entry points into the same graph, no questions asked.
